Dr Ben Spencer has been the Conservative Member of Parliament for Runnymede and Weybridge since 2019, succeeding former Chancellor Philip Hammond. A qualified consultant psychiatrist, Ben brings over a decade of NHS experience to his role in Parliament, with a particular focus on mental health reform, science, and public health.
Born in Liverpool in 1981, Ben attended a state grammar school in the West Midlands before studying medicine in London. He holds a PhD in Decision-Making Capacity and a master’s degree in mental health law. Prior to his parliamentary career, he worked at leading institutions including King’s College Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital.
In Parliament, Ben has held several key positions:
- Shadow Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology (appointed November 2024)
- Shadow Minister for Health and Social Care (July–November 2024)
- Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party, focusing on campaigning, candidates, and diversity (2023–2024)
He has also served on the Work and Pensions Select Committee and is actively involved in All-Party Parliamentary Groups on mental health and wellbeing.
Ben’s priorities for Runnymede and Weybridge include:
- Enhancing NHS services, particularly mental health and local care access
- Improving flood defences and sustainable infrastructure
- Supporting local schools, jobs, and businesses
- Reducing air and noise pollution
Ben has been an active advocate for young professionals and young families.
